In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
